Headshots in Downtown Cincinnati
Earlier this winter I photographed a branding and headshot session with Dalyn in downtown Cincinnati using 35mm film. Shot on Kodak Portra 400 with my Canon AE-1, the goal was to create portraits that felt polished and natural while highlighting the energy of the city.
We chose a few locations that reflect Cincinnati’s architectural character, including the rooftop of the Mercantile Building and nearby Fountain Square. The combination of city textures, open light, and film photography created a set of portraits that feel both modern and timeless.
A Film Approach to Headshots and Branding
While most headshots today are created digitally, I often incorporate film into portrait sessions when it fits the look a client is hoping to achieve. Film has a subtle softness and depth that works beautifully for personal branding photography, especially when photographed in natural light.
For this session, Kodak Portra 400 allowed us to capture flattering skin tones and a natural color palette while keeping the overall aesthetic relaxed and editorial. The result feels less like a traditional headshot session and more like a set of lifestyle portraits that reflect both personality and place.
Photographing in Downtown Cincinnati
Downtown Cincinnati offers an incredible variety of backdrops for portrait sessions, and Dalyn’s shoot made use of several of my favorite locations.
We began on the rooftop of the Mercantile Building, where the open skyline and soft evening light created a clean, modern setting for portraits. From there we moved through the surrounding downtown streets before finishing at Fountain Square, one of Cincinnati’s most recognizable public spaces.
The mix of architectural lines, city movement, and natural light allowed us to create images that feel distinctly Cincinnati while still keeping the focus on the person being photographed.
Why Film Works Well for Branding Photography
For professionals who want their portraits to feel elevated and authentic, film photography offers a unique look that stands apart from typical digital headshots.
Film naturally softens light and color in a way that feels both refined and approachable. When paired with thoughtful styling and an intentional location, it creates portraits that feel personal rather than overly polished.
For entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals building a personal brand, these kinds of portraits can work beautifully across websites, press features, social media, and professional profiles.
Planning a Headshot or Branding Session in Cincinnati
Headshot and branding sessions can be photographed in a variety of environments depending on the look you want to create. Some clients prefer a clean studio aesthetic, while others gravitate toward the architectural textures and natural light found throughout downtown Cincinnati.
Sessions can incorporate multiple locations, wardrobe changes, and both digital and film photography to create a set of images that feel versatile and cohesive.
If you’re looking to update your professional portraits or create branding imagery that feels polished yet natural, I would love to connect.
